~ The Dos and Don'ts of Perfect Bikini Zone Skin~

When it comes to beauty, nothing is more of a trial and error process than achieving a hairless, baby-smooth bikini area. Between all the hair removal options, personal preferences and every girl’s specific  “down-there” skin type, it can take forever to actually find a routine that works. Like everything else beauty related, there’s always an expert endorsing “THE best” way or product to achieve your dream, hair-free bikini zone.Below,  Licensed aesthetician Rachel Sharoff at Skintology Skin and Laser Center in Manhattan dishes out the dos and don’ts for perfect bikini zone skin, whether you shave, wax or laser. Choose what’s right for you and stay in the zone!
Shaving
Work with your skin type. If your go to method is shaving, the first thing to note is how your skin reacts. If you have little or no bumps after a shave (you lucky, lucky girl!) stick to moisturizing the area for a couple of days before and after a session. If your skin is moderately-to-extremely sensitive, develop an exfoliating and moisturizing routine. Rule of thumb: if it’s sensitive enough for your face it’s sensitive enough for your bikini zone.
Go slow. A lot of irritation can be caused by simply shaving too fast. The friction of razor on skin can cause bumps, redness and ingrowns. Be patient, slide the razor slowly but firmly, and you’ll be surprised at how much less irritated the area is.
Break out a new razor, often. If you shave daily or every few days, throw out your razor every two to three weeks. A fresh sharp razor is essential to a great shave.
Laser
Shave the day before. A fresh shave helps the laser locate the follicles. Use a clean, new razor to ensure there is no lingering bacteria that could cause contact dermatitis (a delayed allergic reaction) after your laser treatment.

Avoid coffee. Or anything with caffeine, really, it has been said to increase sensitivity.
Be rested and hydrated. Your pain receptors will be higher if you're fatigued and dehydrated.
Ask your technician to try different paces. Each technician has his or her own technique. Some perform in quick bursts, while others use a slow, continuous pace. One technique may feel better on your skin than the next.
Avoid tanning. Both tanning beds and the sun can be harmful after exposing your skin to laser, avoid both and put on SPF!
Waxing
Prep your skin. Exfoliate and moisturize for about a week until the day before your wax. Clean, moisturized skin if more flexible; it’s much less painful to wax than dry skin.
Find the right wax. Hard wax is usually a honey color and is peeled by the technician using her hand, as opposed to the paper strips used to remove soft wax. It is commonly said that hard wax is less painful and better for skin. There is also sugar wax, and many other varieties that boast different benefits.
Work around your period. Your skin is more sensitive and your pain threshold lower, both before and during your time of the month.
Make sure your hair is long enough. It should be at least ¼ of an inch long for wax to catch it. If you can grab it with your fingertips you’re good to go.
Don’t shave in between sessions. Shaved hair grows back harder and coarser, as opposed to waxed hair, which grows back thinner each time. Shaving in between sessions ruins the benefits of waxing.
Whatever method you choose, go out and conquer!
